British Standards Institution (BSI) the world's leading management systems certification firm has recently conferred ISO-9001-2000 certification to Tata Power's 'Power System Division' for its design, testing, supply, installation and commissioning of overhead Transmission Line Projects.
This particular division of Tata Power is India’s leading private sector EPC contractor for High Voltage Transmission Line projects. BSI’s recent accreditation therefore reflects Tata Power’s competitive edge and its commitment to set up and document all of its systems and procedures with regard to planning, product development, project management, employee training, quality of service amongst others.
“The need for International Standard Organisation (ISO) certification was clear, and we found that, as a leader in the overhead Transmission Line Projects, we had the capability to demonstrate our compliance to the well defined international standards of quality and consistency which will play an important role while customers chose us as a preferred EPC contractor” said Tata Power spokes person.
Tata Power’s ISO certification is significant in view of the fact, that it has constructed numerous turnkey Transmission Line projects in India, Nepal, Thailand, Philippines on an EPC basis for the last two decades demonstrating expertise in design, engineering, supply management, erection, stringing and commissioning of HV Transmission Lines.
Commenting on the preparatory work for BSI’s ISO certification Mr. S K Bhattacharya, Vice President, Power System Division said, ” It has taken us 8 months to comply with BSI’s ISO-9001-2000 certification. Currently our working systems and processes has been defined and procedures are well documented in 13 separate manuals”.
“Today we have an approved process manuals for bid handling, planning and resource provisioning, product development, procurement, project management, vendor management, customer complaint, customer satisfaction measurement, training, measurement and monitoring and management review. We also have a separate procedure manual for Quality System Management that takes into account internal quality audit, corrective and preventive actions, control of quality records, document and data control. These processes will produce performance improvements and cost savings over the long term’ he added.
Currently, the Division is implementing the 400 kV Kishanpur-Thathar-Wagoora Transmission Line of Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd., in Jammu and Kashmir and a prestigious supply contract for supply of power equipment to the Myanmar Electric Power Enterprise under a Line of Credit provided by the Govt. of India. Further, it has just completed the 132 kV Transmission Line and Sub-station contract for the Kali Gandaki Hydroelectric System of the Nepal Electricity Authority.
