Tata Power, India's leading power utility company today accepted certification of their Quality Management System at Trombay Thermal Power Station in compliance with the requirements of ISO 9001:2000 Standard Indian Register Quality Systems (IRQS). IRQS is a department of the Indian Register of Shipping and is the first certification body in Asia to have received the Certificate of Accreditation from Raad voor Accreditatie (RvA), the Dutch Council of Accreditation, Netherlands.
In addition to the accreditation by IRQS, British Standards Institution (BSI) recently conferred ISO-9001-2000 certification to Tata Power's "Power System Division" for its design, testing, supply, installation and commissioning of overhead Transmission Line Projects. Tata Power's Thermal Power Station located at Jojobera has already received the ISO certification of their Quality Management System in August 2002 from Bureau Veritas Quality International (BVQI). Tata Power is also in the process of obtaining the Certificate of Approval of its Quality Management System for its other Hydro Generating plants located at Bhira, Bhivpuri and Khopoli.
As part of the qualification process for the ISO certification, Tata Power's Trombay Thermal Power Plant undertook an intensive internal exercise, which included conducting bi-lingual awareness sessions for its workforce, establishing cross-functional teams to study various aspects of the standard, identifying and documenting procedures for all required activities and submitting an Apex Quality Manual for auditors review and perusal.
While receiving the ISO certification from Capt. J. C. Anand, Chairman, Indian Register of Shipping, Mr. Firdose Vandrevala, Managing Director, Tata Power said, "Tata Power has proven time and again its ability to match international standards and the ISO certification for our Trombay plant validates our adherence to international quality and service standards. The hallmark of high quality service permeates the areas of generation and supply of power to receiving stations, direct customers and providing technical services to other power plants".
Over the years Tata Power's Trombay plant has played a pioneering role in India's power sector having several firsts to its credit, including commissioning the first 500MW Thermal unit in India, computerised Grid Control and Energy Management Systems, Flue Gas De-sulphurisation plant using seawater amongst others. Apart from this Tata Power Company has played a significant role in the erection, testing, commissioning and trial operations of major power projects in India such as Uran Phase II & III, Ramagundam Thermal Power Project, Rihand Super Thermal Power Project, Dadri Combined Cycle Power Plant on behalf of MSEB, NTPC, respectively.
