Tata Power’s flagship “Energy Conservation” campaign crosses 7-lakh mark, marches towards ONE MILLION milestone
- Mumbai, February 05, 2010

Campaign sensitizes seven lakh citizens in Mumbai, Delhi, Ahmedabad, Belgaum, Kolkatta, Bengaluru, Jamshedpur, Lonavla and Pune!

With rising concerns on climate change and energy shortage in India, power saving has become the need of the hour. It has been Tata Power’s endeavour to proactively sensitize citizens across the country on this global issue and at the same time provide them with effective measures to curb energy wastage in their sphere of influence. With this objective in mind, Tata Power, India’s largest integrate private power utility set up “Tata Power Energy Club” three years back, to help citizens understand the importance of conserving energy and reducing wastage.

The ‘Tata Power Energy Club’, comprising schools and schoolchildren to curb energy-wastage through active measures, today stands with an achievement of sensitizing 7 lakh citizens nationally in cities like Mumbai, New Delhi, Ahmedabad, Pune, Jamshedpur, Lonavla, Belgaum, Bengaluru and Kolkata.

The “Conservation Programme” piloted in 2007 with 12 schools in Mumbai and Belgaum and which was extended to 28 schools later on in 2008, has now reached a laudable target of 250 schools across Mumbai, Delhi, Ahmedabad, Pune, Lonavla, Jamshedpur, Belgaum, Bengaluru and Kolkata. College students from Mumbai and Pune have also joined the mission along with parents and partners like Rotary Club.

Tata Power Energy Club’s Energy Brigade today comprises not only of school children but also Youth, Parents, Teachers and Partners who want to make a difference to this cause and practicing energy conservation and also educating the society on the need for conservation.

Speaking on the achievement, Mr. Prasad Menon, Managing Director, Tata Power, “This achievement is a proud moment for us. We are committed towards creating a cleaner and emission free environment. We strongly believe that “Tata Power Energy Club” will play an important role through these young harbingers who have proved themselves as strong influencers in conserving our environment and saving energy. With their overwhelming support, we are very close in achieving our milestone target of one million by this year”.

The year 2009 saw the programme receiving 2487 Energy champions across India, who did a commendable job of saving more than 237296 units and sensitizing more than 1.5 lakh people in a very short span of time. The efforts of these Energy champions were well appreciated and proved as an inspiration to other students. Currently, the programme received 17811 energy ambassadors across the targeted cities and is marching towards its main goal of achieving sensitization of 1 million citizens!

AboutTata Power Energy Club’ (TPEC):

The Tata Power Energy Club started with educating and sensitizing school children, comprising several schools across Mumbai, Belgaum and other locations to spark off a youth initiative for curbing energy wastage through active measures. More than 11,660 children sensitized in 28 schools were encouraged to spread the word amongst their neighbourhoods in an attempt to create awareness about this issue. The participants who managed to show the maximum savings in their electricity bills or who reached out to a large number of people were felicitated as ‘Energy Champions’.

The initiative taken by the young kids resulted in the total number of sensitized “Mumbaikars” standing at 38,000 in the academic year 2008-2009! Tata Power looks at setting in a motion a movement which could well help lead to a better tomorrow for not just citizens of Mumbai but of the country. It is an Energy Conservation initiative that focuses on bringing about a first-hand realization of the energy crisis in country at large, through the enterprise and creativity of our youth!

TPEC provides the ground for youth to share and expand their understanding, and bring about a chain-reaction that can significantly reduce wastage of energy in the city. With adequate publicity, the Club will sensitize citizens across India, and the spark can turn into a spreading flame of enthusiasm to protect our resources and environment.

About Megawatt Millionaire - "I make the difference":

They will encourage their influence group to practice energy conservation. The objective of this programme is to maximize reach to Mumbai citizens through a direct contact and ripple effect of already sensitized children.
