Tata Power to commission its 3 MW grid connected Solar Photo Voltaic power plant in Mulshi by end of 2010
- Mumbai, July 07, 2010

Takes a big Leap in enhancing its Solar Energy Portfolio by targeting additional 300 MW
solar based capacity in future

Tata Power India’s largest integrated private power utility is developing a 3 MW, Photo Voltaic(PV) based, grid connected Solar plant at Mulshi, in the Western Ghats which will be the largest grid connected solar plant in Maharashtra.

Tata Power aims to commission this first and largest solar photovoltaic (PV) power plant in Maharashtra located at Mulshi by end of 2010. The 12 acre Mulshi site offers the advantage of ownership, manageability, and ease of power evacuation. The Company had set up its first solar power plant of 100 kW way back in 1996 at Walwan in Lonavla.
Tata Power also plans to install solar capacity in Gujarat towards meet its target of having 20-25% of total capacity from "zero-carbon power" by 2017.

The Company has taken the initiative to set its own goals to contribute to a greener and more sustainable future. The Company’s strategy emphasizes the development of clean energy generation from renewable sources to balance the carbon intensity from major coal-based capacity and to contribute towards energy security of the country. In the wake of the announcement of the National Solar Mission by the Government of India and policy incentives therein, Tata Power’s ambition for solar power generation has been bolstered to 300 MW of capacity by 2013.

Mr. Banmali Agrawala, Executive Director, Strategy and Development, Tata Power said, “We are very happy to announce that our 3 MW solar power is progressing well and will be commissioned later this year.”

Tata BP Solar is the technology provider for the project. The project will be Tata Power’s and Tata BP Solar’s first experience with building, operating, and maintaining a megawatt-scale grid-connected solar power plant in India. Given the modular nature of the system, the execution period for this project is relatively short.

Solar power generation technologies can be broadly divided into solar PV and solar thermal technologies. In the former class of technologies, the method of conversion to power is direct; solar energy hitting the surface of PV material to generate power. In systems using solar thermal technologies, solar energy is utilized to heat up a medium, which, in turn, runs an engine to generate power. Solar PV technology surpasses solar thermal technology in terms of installed capacity.

About Tata Power:

Tata Power is India's largest private sector power utility with an installed generation capacity of over 2900 MW and a presence in all the segments of the power sector viz Generation (thermal, hydro, solar and wind), Transmission, Distribution and Trading. The Company has successful public-private partnerships in Generation, Transmission and Distribution - “North Delhi Power Limited” with Delhi Vidyut Board for distribution in North Delhi, ‘Powerlinks Transmission Ltd.’ with Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd. for evacuation of Power from Tala hydro plant in Bhutan to Delhi and ‘Maithon Power Ltd.’ with Damodar Valley Corporation for a 1050 MW Mega Power Project at Jharkhand. It has acquired 30% stake in Coal Companies at Indonesia and is developing the first 4000 MW Ultra Mega Power Project at Mundra (Gujarat) based on super-critical technology. With its track record of technology leadership, customer care and redefining contours of the Indian power sector, Tata Power is poised for a five-fold growth and committed to ‘lighting up lives’ for generations to come.
