Tata Power today signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Tata Steel Limited and Corus Steel B.V. for the construction of a 525 MW combined heat and power plant at Corus’ IJmuiden works in the Netherlands.
Under this MoU, Tata Power and Tata Steel will set up a Joint Venture Company to build, own and operate the power plant. This power plant will use most of the excess production gases of the steel plant and will convert the same into steam and power for the use of the steel plant.
This power plant will enable Corus’ IJmuiden works to secure its own long-term steam and power needs. The Corus’ IJmuiden plant is also a green power project and adds to the growing sustainable energy portfolio for Tata Steel and Tata Power in reducing its carbon footprint significantly. As the power plant will be based on production gases, it will be a low carbon emitting plant. The new power plant will be ready in 2013 and will partly replace the existing power supply arrangement with another utility.
Speaking on the occasion, Mr Prasad R Menon, Managing Director of Tata Power said that “We are happy to make another international foray in generation with a green power project which will add to the growing sustainable energy portfolio of Tata Power.”
The other green power generation investments that Tata Power has internationally are the Dagachhu Hydro Power Project in Bhutan; the geothermal project, Geodynamics in Australia and EXERGEN in Australia to critically evaluate Clean Coal Technologies for commercial applications. Further our renewable portfolio in India includes installed generation capacity of 155.5 MW of wind farms, 120 MW Power House 6 and 90 MW Haldia power project.
