Strategic Electronic Division (SED)

In the 30+ years of its presence in Strategic Electronics, Tata Power SED has designed and developed electronic products and systems using state-of-art technology, for Defence and other core sectors. With over 90% of the Division's strategic electronics work executed for Defence, SED has established long-standing relationships with the Indian Armed Forces and the Defence Laboratories.

SED (Mumbai) was established in 1967 and is today a leading development organisation, having pioneered indigenous design and development of many hi-tech systems for Defence and Industry. The manufacturing facility was established in 1982 and is situated in Bangalore.

The Mumbai operation is recognised by the Department of Science and Technology, and the Bangalore facility is ISO 9001-2000 certified. SED's forte is the development and integration of real-time and mission-critical decision-support systems, suitably ruggedised to operate in harsh environments of varying severity. The Division is focused to deliver in this product niche.

Its range of products bears witness to the multiple disciplines in which the Division has garnered the requisite expertise. These disciplines span a very broad spectrum, which includes system conceptualisation, hardware and software design, engineering and integration.

Products developed in the last 10 years include:

• Advanced display consoles for C4I applications
• Servo controllers and associated mechanical structures for tracking platforms
• A range of software products for real-time / mission-critical decision-support applications
• Rugged Computers and special purpose computers covering dual-redundant fault-tolerant configurations, and
• Training Simulators for Locomotives, Power Plants & Air Traffic Control

With the formidable Tata reputation and SED's technical and management expertise, the Division is being increasingly entrusted with the integration of large and complex systems, requiring extensive interfacing and integration of hardware and software inputs from diverse sources.

Notable recent achievements in this area are:

• Electronic Warfare Control Centre for the Army
• Combat Systems for the Navy
• Advanced Automatic Data Handling Air Defence System for the Air Force, and
• Advance Automotive Electrical System for the Army's Main Battle Tank.

In summary, the Strategic Electronic Division has been contributing in its way towards serving India's National Security and Defence needs. The Division will continue to spearhead, in concert with other Tata Group Companies as necessary, the indigenous development, production and integration of advanced systems.
