Tata Power receives the Greentech Gold Award for safety (August 18, 2003)

"Greentech Safety Award" was instituted by Greentech Foundation in the year 2001-2002.The award is presented to organisations / companies / individuals in recognition of their outstanding achievements in the field of safety on the basis of evaluation of their performance during the period of April to March every year. Tata Power, Jamshedpur was awarded the Greentech Gold Award for safety in the thermal power sector.

Tata Power, Jamshedpur has set a benchmark by reaching zero accidents this year. This happened due to the various safety practices adopted and implemented in the division religiously.

Safety pledge - Every year on Safety Day all employees and contractors of Tata Power take pledge to eradicate unsafe activities from the root.

Safety gate pass system - All new contract workmen who join the division have to undergo safety and environment training before they take up the main job. This training is followed by an examination where the workman has to qualify to get an entry gate pass and this has been made mandatory for all contractors from this year.

Improved permit to work system

  • The permit to work (PTW) system has undergone improvement. After ensuring that all necessary steps have been taken as per the departmental work instructions to isolate the equipment both safety officer and shift in-charge jointly issue the PTW slip to requesting party.
  • The work permit is issued with an enclosed in-built checklist indicating safety precaution required to be taken. The enclosed checklist has the same number as work permit.
  • If the work is not completed by the requisitioned person or group the work permit has to be cancelled for the day or transferred in the name of other person or group taking over the charge.
  • A register is maintained in the control room summarising the details of all work permits issued. The register has following entries in a tabular format
    a) Permit to work number
    b) Equipment details
    c) Description of job
    d) Date and time of issue
    e) Issued to
    f) Date of return
    g) Remarks
  • Workers whose blood pressure is found to be high are not allowed to work at height.

Detailed risk analysis and emergency identification

The division has identified its potential hazards and accompanied risk through management systems like OHSAS and EMS vide its HIRA and aspect - Impact analyses. For handling the identified risks the division has an emergency preparedness and response procedure, disaster management and on-site emergency plan. ITe division also has various procedures and work instructions directed for prevention of emergencies in its quality and environment management system. Written safe / standard operating procedures (SOPs) have been made available in the plant. The line management, maintenance management and safety officer review them for safety of man and machine.

Safety audits

- Internal audits are conducted using IS 14498:1998 - code of practice of on OH&S audit and IS 15001:2000 as a guiding framework. External audit was done by the National Safety Council and corrective action was taken to close the findings.

Safety stewards

- As an innovative measure the division has developed safety stewards in each department of the company and among each contractor working on the premises. These stewards play a great role in creating safety awareness and ensuring safety in the jobs handled by their group or department.

Mass communication on safety

Safety posters and slogans have been displayed throughout the plant. Safety workbook and safety manual of the division have been given to all contractors and workmen to ensure safety at the division. There are safety training modules for the illiterate labour

Tata Power, Jamshedpur has not only made its work environment safe but has taken a step ahead by reaching to its stakeholders with its safety health and environment awareness programmes. The division has also given a human touch to the people residing in nearby localities by organising safety and health awareness session and camps.
