Energy Conservation and Efficiency

At Tata Power, Energy conservation is an important element of our energy policy and aims at educating customers and public at large to reduce energy wastage and increase energy efficiency. We believe that energy conservation is the most economical solution to energy shortages that our country is facing, and is a more environmentally benign alternative to increased energy production if practiced with rigour. By reducing emissions, energy conservation is also an important part of lessening climate change.

Contact with Consumers on Energy Conservation

Tata Power along with other electricity distribution companies of Mumbai, few years back had launched an awareness campaign through advertisement to educate consumers about power conservation measures. The campaign - “I Will, Mumbai Will “was focused on shifting power usage away from the peak consumption period, more intelligent use of high power using devices such as air-conditioners, responsible electricity consumption behaviour (such as switching off devices at the plug point when not in use) and encouraging consumers to use energy efficient devices. Now the Company focuses on year round education of its consumers in the area of energy efficiency.

Tata Power Energy Club:
Education Program for School Children on Energy Conservation

Tata Power began an Energy Conservation Programme for school children in the academic year 2007-08. We have extended the outreach to many more schools in 2008-09. This initiative has evolved into an informal club called Tata Power Energy Club comprising schoolchildren, teachers and families who not only practice but advocate energy conservation in their sphere of influence.  Children from Class V to VIII standard are being sensitised on issues relating to energy efficiency and conservation and we believe that this initiative is on its way to become a strong movement nationally. See www.tatapowerenergyclub.com for more details.

Crusading for the Cause

Tata Power is one of the 53 companies to sign up for the Combat Climate Change (3C) initiative by a group of global companies that are seeking an integration of climate issues. Tata Power produced 14.7 million MWh of energy in the year 2007-08 and released 11.2 million tonnes of CO2 as emissions. This includes carbon dioxide emissions from other business activities such as road and air travel for company work. Thus, the Carbon Dioxide Intensity was 730 kg/MWh.

The company has appointed Dr. Avinash Patkar as the Chief Sustainability Officer (CSO) in addition to being the Head of Corporate Safety, Health and Environment (SHE). Tata Power is the only energy organisation in India that has a person who directly reports to the Managing Director whose sole responsibility is to devise, and implement, ways in which the company can reduce its Carbon Footprint and its impact on the communities around its facilities.
