Way Forward
Combating Climate Change is now a “core value” for Tata Power. So, Tata Power has created a Sustainability Council (SC) under the leadership of Mr. Banmali Agrawala, Executive Director (ED) of Business Development and Strategy (BD & S). The Sustainability Council has the following objectives:
- Develop a plan to reduce carbon intensity by improving thermal efficiency in existing fossil fuel based plants and using clean coal technology for future plants (e.g. pre-dried brown coal in ultra super-critical plants with a carbon dioxide intensity of 700 kg/MWh instead of 1,200 kg/MWh for “as is” brown coal in sub-critical boilers).
- Place a special emphasis on new bio, hydro, solar and wind power plants after 2012
- Evaluate nuclear and geothermal power plants for no-carbon base load plants
- Recruit and train young professionals in the area of sustainability
- Be a depository of knowledge on sustainability for the TATA Group
- Be involved in advocacy for clean energy with the regulating agencies
The company is working on a clean technology interface with American Electric Power (AEP) of the US and the European energy major Vattenfall - a leader in the 3 C global initiative. The long term goals are to increase the installed capacity of no-carbon power sources to 40% of the total capacity and to reduce the Carbon Dioxide Intensity by 30%. |
