What if your next electricity bill could start shrinking from your rooftop? If you plan to apply for the PM Surya Ghar Yojana online, the journey begins with registration on the official portal and moves through installation, DISCOM verification and subsidy disbursal. And more households are already making that journey: as of 12th August 2026, 51.58 lakh households were benefiting under the scheme, with nearly 19 lakh receiving zero electricity bills, according to the Press Information Bureau of India.

Steps to apply for the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana online

Applying through the National Portal involves more than filling out a form. Your electricity connection, rooftop solar system, vendor, installation and DISCOM verification all form a part of the process. Here is the updated route for the PM Surya Ghar Yojana online application.

 1. Register on the PM Surya Ghar National Portal

Visit the official PM Surya Ghar National Portal at pmsuryaghar.gov.in and register using your state, DISCOM, electricity consumer number and contact details. The subsidy is available to residential consumers with a valid grid-connected electricity connection. Once registered, an application ID is generated on the portal.

2. Submit the application and choose a registered vendor

Log in to the portal and complete the rooftop solar application. If you want to apply for PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana online, this is where you enter the required system details and proceed with your application. You can also compare available system options and select a vendor registered on the National Portal.

3. Install your rooftop solar system

For rooftop solar systems up to 10 kW, technical feasibility is now deemed accepted without separate DISCOM approval, although the process may vary until the provision is operationalized by the respective state regulator or DISCOM. Once the applicable requirements are completed, get the system installed by a registered vendor in line with the scheme's technical and safety specifications. However, consumers should still check the requirements applicable to their local DISCOM and state regulations before proceeding.

4. Upload installation details and complete DISCOM verification

After installation, update the system details on the National Portal and upload the required documents, including geo-tagged photographs. The DISCOM will physically inspect the system and complete the applicable net metering process and agreement as per state regulations before approving the application for subsidy release.

5. Complete commissioning and receive the subsidy

After DISCOM verification and approval, the e-token linked to your application is activated with the eligible subsidy amount. Redeem it through your portal profile and submit your verified bank account details along with supporting proof such as a cancelled cheque, bank statement or passbook scan.

To receive financial assistance, you must also complete Aadhaar authentication or provide proof of Aadhaar. If you have not yet been assigned an Aadhaar number, you will need to apply for enrolment as prescribed under the scheme. The current guidelines provide for CFA processing within 15 days after DISCOM approval, subject to completion of the required verification and documentation.

Note* - To be eligible, the applicant should be an Indian citizen with a suitable residential rooftop and a valid grid-connected electricity connection. The scheme is meant for residential consumers. If you have already received a rooftop solar subsidy earlier, you may still be eligible for additional CFA when expanding the system, but only for the eligible balance capacity up to an overall 3 kW.

Your rooftop has potential.

Bottom line

What if the next big change in your electricity bill starts on your roof?

PM Surya Ghar makes rooftop solar easier to access, but the bigger story begins after the subsidy is credited. A rooftop can start doing something it never did before: contributing to the electricity your household uses every day. That makes the decision not only about reducing the upfront cost of solar, but also about rethinking where your power comes from in the years ahead.

The application may take a few steps. The shift it enables could last much longer.

So, the smartest way to reduce grid dependence may already be built into your home: the roof.

<h2 id="accordion-heading">Frequently asked <span class="dark-teal">questions</span></h2>
default
How long does PM Surya Ghar subsidy approval take?
Under the current MNRE guidelines, the Central Financial Assistance is to be processed within 15 days after the concerned DISCOM approves the application. This does not mean the entire rooftop solar journey takes 15 days. Installation, document uploads, physical inspection, metering, and any corrections happen before that stage and can affect the overall timeline. Applicants should therefore track each stage separately instead of counting only from the date of registration.
Can I apply for PM Surya Ghar without Aadhaar?
As of the Government of India notification dated 12 March 2026, a beneficiary seeking Central Financial Assistance under PM Surya Ghar must undergo Aadhaar authentication or provide proof of an Aadhaar number. If an Aadhaar number has not yet been assigned, the applicant must apply for Aadhaar enrolment and follow the prescribed identity-verification process. In other words, applicants cannot simply opt out of the Aadhaar requirement while claiming the subsidy.
Is PM Surya Ghar Yojana available for rural households?
Yes. PM Surya Ghar is a demand-driven national scheme and is available to eligible residential consumers across the country, including rural households, provided they have a grid-connected electricity connection with the local DISCOM and meet the applicable scheme requirements. The Government specifically confirmed rural household participation in its July 2026 update on the programme.
Why is my PM Surya Ghar subsidy rejected?
A PM Surya Ghar subsidy claim can be sent back for correction or rejected if the installation or application does not meet scheme requirements. Common issues can include incorrect consumer details, missing documents, use of non-DCR modules, installation through an unregistered vendor, technical non-compliance, problems identified during DISCOM inspection, or bank and identity details that cannot be verified. The DISCOM must provide adequate justification when rejecting a claim.
Can I get the PM Surya Ghar subsidy if I received a solar subsidy earlier?
Receiving a rooftop solar subsidy earlier does not automatically make every future expansion ineligible. Current MNRE guidelines allow additional CFA when a consumer who previously received support increases the rooftop solar capacity, but only for the eligible balance capacity up to an overall 3 kW. A system cannot receive CFA twice for the same installed capacity, and a relocated system is not eligible for a fresh subsidy merely because its location changes.
How much PM Surya Ghar subsidy can I get for a 3-kW system?
For most states and Union Territories, the current central subsidy is ₹30,000 per kWp for the first 2 kW and ₹18,000 per kWp for the next 1 kW. This means a 3-kW system, or any larger system, can receive a maximum standard CFA of ₹78,000. Special-category states and Union Territories have higher notified rates, and some states may also provide additional support subject to applicable scheme rules.
Does PM Surya Ghar mean I will get 300 units of free electricity every month?
Not automatically. The “up to 300 units” proposition is linked to the electricity a suitably sized rooftop solar system can generate. The government notes that a 3-kW system can generate more than 300 units per month on average. The actual generation and the resulting electricity bill depend on factors such as household consumption, solar generation, weather, and electricity exported to the grid.
Can housing societies and RWAs benefit from PM Surya Ghar Yojana?
Yes. Group Housing Societies and Resident Welfare Associations can receive CFA for rooftop solar used for common facilities, including EV charging. The current provision supports eligible capacity up to 500 kW, subject to a limit of 3 kW per house and the overall subsidy conditions. The common connection should be used for shared facilities rather than supplying electricity directly to individual residences.
Can I take a loan to install rooftop solar under PM Surya Ghar?
Yes. The scheme provides access to collateral-free financing through participating banks. As of July 2026, the government stated that loans were available from nationalized banks at repo rate plus 50 basis points, currently 5.75% per annum, with a tenure of up to 10 years. Loan applications are facilitated through the JanSamarth ecosystem integrated with the PM Surya Ghar portal.
Does a rooftop solar system up to 10 kW need feasibility approval?
Under the amended MNRE guidelines, rooftop solar applications up to 10 kW are deemed approved without separate technical feasibility approval from the DISCOM under the Electricity (Rights of Consumers) framework. However, implementation can still depend on the relevant State Regulatory Commission and DISCOM. Until the provision is operationalized locally, consumers may be asked to submit documents for feasibility approval in accordance with existing state regulations
