Tata Power has been associated with the growing legacy of Mumbai as a business city for almost a century now. Mumbai's growth has been literally powered by Tata Power's reliable power supply.

The Company has since spread its footprint across the country and abroad. Outside Mumbai, the Company now has generation capacities in the States of Jharkhand, West Bengal, Gujarat, and Karnataka and a Distribution Company in Delhi. The thermal power stations of the Company are located at Trombay in Mumbai, Jojobera and Maithon in Jharkhand and Belgaum in Karnataka and Mundra in Gujarat.

The hydro stations are located in the Western Ghats of Maharashtra and the wind farms in Maharashtra, Gujarat and Karnataka.

An optimum mix of hydel and thermal capacity enables the company to supply power at competitive tariffs to its customers. At 1.9% the Company's transmission & distribution losses are among the lowest in the country. Also, at the core of reliable power supply to the city is the unique 'Islanding' system pioneered by Tata Power, due to which the city of Mumbai has the advantage of assured uninterrupted reliable supply of power. In case of a grid failure, an "Islanding system" ensures power supply within the city limits.

The Company's growth plans include steady capacity addition year-on-year, taking its current installed capacity to 26000MW by 2020.

4000 MW Mundra Ultra Mega Power Project (UMPP)

In the mid-1990s the Mega Power Project policy met with limited success. Hence, aligned with the objective of 'Power to all by 2012', the Government of India started planning Ultra Mega Power Projects (UMPP) in 2005. Each of the projects with an installed capacity of 4000 MW was envisaged with the intent to make power available at minimum cost through economies of scale and superior, energy efficient and environment-friendly technology.

The Mundra UMPP - A Source of Clean and Abundant Power

Coastal Gujarat Power Limited (CGPL), Tata Power's wholly-owned subsidiary, has implemented the 4000 MW (800 x 5 units) UMPP near the port city of Mundra in the state of Gujarat in India. This UMPP is India's first 800 MW unit thermal power plant using supercritical technology, and is arguably the most energy-efficient, coal-based thermal power plant in the country.

As per the bidding norms, the Project was designed to be run on imported coal. The Project is expected to benefit close to 16 million domestic consumers apart from supplying cost competitive power to industry and agriculture.

The Project will supply power to five states namely Gujarat, Rajasthan and Maharashtra in Western India and to Haryana and Punjab in Northern India, which are currently facing shortage of electricity. It will provide a competitive source of power and help meet these states' growing demand for electricity. Reliable power from the project will help improve the competitiveness of the manufacturing and services industries, which often rely on expensive standby diesel generation to meet their power needs. Competitively priced power will also improve access to electricity in rural and urban areas, while reducing the subsidy burden on the state Governments.

Mundra UMPP Highlights

  • India's first 4000 MW private power project near Mundra Port, Gujarat
  • India's most energy efficient plant using supercritical technology
  • Main power generation equipment sourced from Korea and Japan
  • Creation of 5000 construction jobs and 700 operations-oriented jobs
  • A plant with lower Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions
  • The Mundra Project will meet 2% of India's power needs
  • Consumers in five of India's power starved states will benefit from this project
  • All the 5 Units (Units 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5) have been commissioned

Maithon Power Limited (A Joint venture of Tata Power and DVC)

Maithon Power Limited (MPL), a joint venture of TATA POWER & DVC, has implemented the 1050 MW (2X525 MW units) near the city of Dhanbad in the state of Jharkhand in India. This Project is India's first 525 MW unit thermal power plants using subcritical technology, coal-based thermal power plant in the country and the first PPP venture plant in the country.

As per the bidding norms, the Project was designed to be run on Indian coal. The Project is expected to benefit close to 16 million domestic consumers apart from supplying cost competitive power to industry and agriculture.

The Project will supply power to four states namely New Delhi, Jharkhand, West Bengal and Kerala as per long term PPA which are currently facing shortage of electricity. It will provide a competitive source of power and help meet these states' growing demand for electricity. Reliable power from the project will help improve the competitiveness of the manufacturing and services industries.

MPL Highlights

  • India's first 525 MW power project near Dhanbad, Jharkhand.
  • India's first Power Project in Private-Public Joint Venture.
  • Main power generation equipment sourced from M/S BHEL,INDIA
  • Consumers in four of India's power starved states will benefit from this project
  • Both the 2 Units have been commissioned
