Initiative to help educate people in the high-risk group

Tata Power Community Development Trust (TPCDT) has always worked towards the betterment of the lives of its communities. Taking the philosophy ahead, TPCDT Trombay today launched the 'Arogya Mitra' - Strategic Employee Volunteering initiative to spread awareness on HIV-AIDS amongst high-risk groups. The initiative aims to sensitize 2000 youth, police personnel, contract workers and truck drivers in FY 18.

Arogya Mitra, which means a friend for reinforcing positive behavioral change practices, has the objective of educating people about the growing prevalence of HIV-AIDS in society. The TPCDT team has already organised three awareness sessions under the 'Arogya Mitra' programme for around 500 college youth in Mumbai. The session was led by Mr. Arjinder Singh and Mr. Thosar, and was contributed to by 11 employees from Tata Power. The programmes organized thus far have received overwhelming response from the participants.

Speaking about the initiative, Mr. Ashok Sethi, Executive Director and COO, Tata Power, said, “We are proud to launch this initiative and are very encouraged by the active participation we have received from our employees. Through the 'Arogya Mitra' initiative we aim to educate more than 35000 youth across Maharashtra and Gujarat on the measures to protect themselves from this potentially life-threatening disease. We would like to thank our employees who have volunteered to make this initiative a positive success.

The findings of a latest report mention that more than 78 million people have become infected with HIV and 35 million people have died of AIDS-in India till now. Around 39000 new cases were reported in the Maharashtra alone in FY 17. The study further revealed that age group of 18yrs to 25yrs are most affected of HIV-AIDS disease. Through the 'Arogya Mitra' programme TPCDT aims to bring down the incidence of this transmittable disease, while also debunking social myths around it.
