CGPL delivers clean drinking water to Vadi Vistar- Mota Bhadiya village in Kutch, Gujarat

14 Aug 2018

~The new pipeline will benefit 40 households and 350 cattle~

Coastal Gujarat Power Ltd (CGPL), a fully owned subsidiary of Tata Power, India’s largest integrated power utility, today announced the completion of a three and a half kilometre pipeline project that will deliver clean drinking water to the people of Vadi Vistar - Motabhadiya village in Kutch, Gujarat.

Motabhadiya village has been one of the villages   of Kutch which is falling under arid zone. By laying the new water pipeline in Vadi Vistar - Motabhadiya, CGPL has continued to strengthen its commitment towards helping the local communities through its Corporate Social Responsibility initiatives.  The pipeline is connected with the Overhead Water Tank, constructed by Motabhadiya Panchayat under the Government scheme.  This pipe line will deliver drinking water to 40 homes and 350 cattle in the village. In this village, earlier RO plant was also installed by CGPL for availability of clean water. This village is also covered under CGPL’s participatory ground water management program and falls under the defined cluster of CGPL’s PGWM program.

This drinking water project was financially supported by CGPL and the local panchayat. This is also part of CGPL’s efforts to support water projects in local communities through its Participatory Groundwater management work.  The company in the past has established RO plants in all the schools and villages that are now run on a self-sustaining model.  Apart from water pipelines, local schools have also been provided with Tata Swach, a global award-winning water purifier from the Tata Group.

Mr.Ashok Sethi, COO & Executive Director, Tata Power said, “CGPL’s participatory groundwater management has worked well in the past.  We applied the same principles of water management when village Panchayat from Motabhadiya approached us for support to bring drinking water to the house holds of the village.  The main pipeline built by CGPL and the distribution lines built by the Panchayat are now connected to the village’s main water tank that supplies clean water to 40 homes in the village. The commitment of every stakeholder helped us complete this project successfully. This is one of the best examples of partnership with panchayat hence addressing the need of the community.”

About Coastal Gujarat Power Ltd:

Coastal Gujarat Power Limited (CGPL), a wholly-owned subsidiary of Tata Power Ltd, has implemented the 4000 MW (800 x 5 units) UMPP near the port city of Mundra in the state of Gujarat in India. This UMPP is India's first 800 MW unit thermal power plant using supercritical technology and is arguably the most energy-efficient, coal-based thermal power plant in the country. As per the bidding norms, the Project was designed to be run on imported coal. The Project is expected to benefit close to 16 million domestic consumers apart from supplying cost-competitive power to industry and agriculture. The Project will supply power to five states namely Gujarat, Rajasthan and Maharashtra in Western India and to Haryana and Punjab in Northern India, which are currently facing a shortage of electricity. It will provide a competitive source of power and help meet these states' growing demand for electricity. Reliable power from the project will help improve the competitiveness of the manufacturing and services industries, which often rely on expensive standby diesel generation to meet their power needs. Competitively priced power will also improve access to electricity in rural and urban areas while reducing the subsidy burden on the state Governments.
