A healthy populace ensures a healthy economy. Keeping this in mind, Tata Power’s CSR team at Trombay provided support to enrol financially vulnerable families in the Public Distribution System in and around its operational area. Under its ADHIKAAR initiative, a financial inclusion programme of the company, it collaborated with the Food and Civil Supply Department for filling forms and provide documentation support to the economically backward communities of Mumbai’s M ward.

Mumbai’s M ward is densely populated with slum dwellers and is lowest in Human Development Index compared to the other wards of the city. As per a recent TISS study, 39% of the population can afford only one meal a day, 45% children (0 to 5 yrs.) experience a stunted growth and 35% children (0 to 5 yrs.) are malnourished.

With the help of 8680 employee volunteers, Tata Power’s CSR team successfully organized 80 camps in 30 slum clusters and managed to enrol over 27,000 families (of 1,30,000 people approximately) making them eligible to receive subsidised food grains at low cost.

Speaking on this occasion, Mr Praveer Sinha, CEO & MD, Tata Power said, “Tata Group has always been a value driven organisation. As a part of Tata’s, we integrate environmental and social principles in our businesses ensuring that what comes from the people goes back to them substantially. Through this initiative, we aim to materialise Tata Power’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of zero hunger and ensure good health through various initiatives in future. We would also like to thank the Food & Civil Supply Department for giving us the opportunity to support them in their endeavours.”

With Tata Power’s linkage to the government schemes, economically backward families will receive food grains at subsidised rate of Rs. 5 kg/ per person/ per month; wheat at Rs. 2/- kg and rice at Rs. 3/- kg. This will help facilitate the daily calorie requirement of 2100 calories per adult per day. The company frequently organises rationing camps with the help of local SHGs, Community Based Organisations and key community leaders by conducting awareness camps for the communities.
