24 Jun 2019
  • Mobilises over 1600 tribal women across 42 villages
  • Generates an overall income of INR 4.25 lakhs by cultivating 3000kgs of mushroom

Tata Power under its ‘Sustainable Agriculture Programme’ has strived to empower women by providing income generation opportunities in and around its operational areas. In line with its commitment for women and rural development, Tata Power mobilised over 1600 tribal women across 42 villages in Jojobera to promote commercial farming. Through this initiative, women generated an overall income of INR4.25 lakhs by cultivating 3000kgs Oyster mushrooms, a seasonal crop.

Within two years, TPCDT has trained over 50 women SHGs comprising 195 members to cultivate mushrooms and provided them with adequate funds to start their own business thereby facilitating regular household income. Overall, around 142 SHGs have been created across 42 villages comprising 10-15 members in each group generating an income of INR40 lakh over a period of three years.

In order to maintain a secured customer base for the produce, the cultivators are provided marketing linkages with local eateries, dhabas and haats. By inter loaning each other, women of these SHGs also support each other by providing funds to be incurred in marketing activities.

Elaborating further on this programme, Mr. Praveer Sinha, CEO & Managing Director, Tata Power said, “Tata Power, has always focused on empowering women by providing them self-employment opportunities and income generation source through our ‘Sustainable Agriculture Programme’ initiative. We aim to uplift the lives of tribal women and also strive to make them financially independent thereby raising their self-esteem.”
