Tata Power promotes integrated education through ‘Shiksha Saarthi’ program in Mundra & Mandvi in Gujarat

Tata Power, through its subsidiary Coastal Gujarat Private Limited (CGPL), has over the years, supported various interventions and programs that has had a profound impact on the learning levels in the communities of Mundra and Mandvi. In a country which focuses on learning by rote, CGPL made learning more interactive and engaging by building the Science Program under its education program, ‘Shiksha Saarthi’. In the Year 2018-19, this  program has by far directly benefitted over 7164 students from 30 schools in 19 villages.

The main objective behind this program was to bridge the learning gap amongst children. Under this program, it provided a platform for them to learn by doing experiments on their own, handle various kinds of apparatuses and tools and explore the natural environment. This was implemented by fostering an environment of learning-by-doing which helped to develop the curiosity amongst children about scientific concepts., A Science Centre with all Science models and equipment has been established, which is creating awareness on scientific concepts. Functions on Various Day of significance has also been observed to increase the awareness among the children. The Science fairs are the important aspects under this program which is benefiting the students very much. To reinforce the interest in Science among the Students Mega Science fair has also been organised which involved the students from 10 villages numbering 450  . The impacts of these programs are multifaceted like, it has  Increased the student attendance and engagement in studies, especially in science, Increased practical knowledge and self-confidence in students through participation in    demonstrative science fairs, Increased overall learning levels in science by 12.5%, the vocabulary and reasoning power has increased from 39% to 68%, the Tool Handling Skills and Drawing Conclusion Skills has also increased in the year 2018-2019 which has been observed in  baseline assessment viz. a viz. comparison with end line assessment,. It is also to be noted that to assess the progress in learning achievements  through  different interventions under Shuksha Saarthi Program,  Baseline, Midline and End line assessments were conducted periodically  in all 30 targeted schools in Mandvi and Mundra

Sharing his thoughts on Shiksha Saarthi, Mr. Vijay Namjoshi, CEO, CGPL, said, “At Tata Power, our efforts have always been towards increasing literacy levels in the communities around us. We are thrilled to know that through our science-focused programs, there has been a shift in the right direction, with a 12.5% increase in learning levels which has been validated through Baseline, Midline and End line assessments conducted during the year 2018-19 in all the 30 schools . These workshops and programs have been received with an overwhelming enthusiasm among the children and the community at large. With the help of the local government bodies, we hope to create a model which can further be replicated to other schools.”

In order to encourage communities to admit their children to schools, the Shiksha Sarthi program conducted awareness program on the importance of education through street campaigns and different communication material. This program has also been instrumental in helping increase the teaching capacity of teachers and other stakeholders through various interventions.
