Tata Power's Maithon Power Limited provides holistic development to residents of Dhanbad

Tata Power, India's largest integrated power company, has always prioritized the wellbeing of its surrounding communities and has simultaneously worked towards improving the quality of life and health of people living in and around its operational areas. In line with this philosophy, Tata Power's Maithon Power Limited (MPL), a 74:26 joint venture between Tata Power and DVC, has undertaken several initiatives for the residents of Dhanbad during FY17 such as livelihood planning, irrigation, technical skills development programs, education excellence programs, and computer literacy and coaching for competitive examinations thereby establishing Maithon Power Limited as a socially responsible and community oriented power company.

With a strategic focus on sustainable long-term programs across all locations, Tata Power Group companies have aligned CSR policy to five thrust areas - Primary Education with focus on girl child, Health & Drinking Water, Livelihood and Employability, Social Capital and Infrastructure, and Inclusive Growth. Following are the initiatives undertaken by Maithon Power Limited in FY1 7:

  • Agriculture and allied sectors were promoted in the area in partnership with BAIF, wherein a 5 years holistic development plan to establish 300 Wadi, on 225 acres of land with irrigation facilities with an aim to integrate 1000 families in livestock industry was initiated. As a part of the program, Wadi has been developed in 225 acres of land and ‘Breed Development Centre’ for goats was established, benefiting 770 families.
  • More than 600 youths were provided with technical skills in power sector though Tata Power Skill Development Institute (TPSDI) at MPL.
  • MPL initiated an education excellence program, in collaboration with TPTCL and developed digital classrooms in 32 schools in order to bridge their learning gap to help 6623 students.
  • 600 local youth and students were provided with soft skill trainings, computer literacy and coaching for competitive examinations.
  • 05 Nos of Solar powered RO plant with a capacity of 1000 LHP has been installed to cater the drinking water requirements in four villages.
  • 03 Nos of solar powered overhead tanks with capacity of 4500 Lts. has been installed in three villages for catering the water requirements on multipurpose use.
  • A new school with eight class room, kitchen and toilet for boys and girls has been constructed.
  • 2340000 Lts of drinking water supplied at the peripheral villages of MPL through water tankers during the summer season.
  • A new handicraft training center with separate stock room was constructed for training and production of handicraft. 60 Nos of women were trained on tailoring in this center. Presently the center has been converted as production unit for tailoring and handicraft.
  • 25000 villagers were given primary health treatment and medicines through our heath initiative. Two mobile medical units (A doctor on wheels) are running throughout the year. A full team of two MBBS doctors, two pharmacists with women health workers are doing medical camps at 24 location 6 days a week. These health workers are from the peripheral villages who are initially given hospital and patient handling training and then were engaged in our health project.
