TPCDT provides Dherand access to safe drinking water through Swajal Dhara Scheme in Dherand, Maharashtra

05 Mar 2018

Tata Power Community Development Trust (TPCDT), has been relentlessly working towards providing safe and clean drinking water to the communities living around the areas of its operations. Continuing with this commitment, the Company with the help of MIDC, was able to bring piped drinking water to Dherand under the Swajal Dhara scheme of the Government of India. This scheme has benefited more than 4,851 people living in Dherand.

The objective of this initiative was to help the rural communities of Dherand with the basic need of access to safe drinking water. Due to contaminated ponds and non-functional hand-pumps the local communities were deprived of safe drinking water which led to mass prevalence of diseases like diarrhoea, common fever and jaundice. In order to address this issue, TPCDT carried out a series of activities, like an awareness programme on the importance of pure drinking water, and the installation of drinking water pipeline. This noble initiative has brought major relief to villagers who had to travel for more than 14 kms to access drinking water or buy drinking water from private contractors at a price of Rs.70 per gallon.

Commenting on the initiative, Mr. Anil Sardana, MD & CEO, Tata Power, said, “TPCDT has always focused on community development projects with the aim of achieving sustainable livelihood for communities in the vicinity of Tata Power plants. Access to potable water is an imperative and the installation of the drinking water pipeline by TPCDT is an effort towards the same. We would like to thank MIDC for helping us implement this project of delivering safe drinking water to the people of Dehrand. We are committed to the health and well being of the locals of Dehrand and will continue to implement such initiatives going forward.

As an extension to its activities in Dehrand, TPCDT has taken several initiatives like installation of RO plants, distribution of water purifiers in schools and communities, watershed management program, installation and repairing of hand pumps, renovation of wells and ponds, water tanker facility in drought affected areas, to address issues related to safe drinking water.
