community members across 12 Anganwadi centres in Mumbai ~

Infant mortality rate of Mumbai is greater than that of Maharashtra (IMR of Mumbai is 25 whereas IMR of Maharashtra is 19). Poor feeding practices often leading to malnutrition which is one of the critical causes of infant mortality. To accomplish the vision of a healthy childhood, Tata Power sensitised 3000 women and community members at the ‘World Breastfeeding Week’ awareness event to emphasize on the importance of effective breastfeeding practices and health initiatives.

Tata Power with the support of NGO- Niramaya Health Foundation organized various educative programs for the community members with an aim to:

  • Sensitise pregnant and lactating mothers and other community members about the correct breastfeeding practices
  • Create supportive environment in household and community for breastfeeding by interacting with the husbands and other family members
  • Correct myths and misconceptions by bridging the gap between traditional information and scientific knowledge
  • Raise awareness on the policies and programmes.

“We, at Tata Power, have always strived to build a healthier future. It gives us immense pleasure to collaborate with an NGO like Niramaya Health Foundation to bring about a behavioural change via community mobilization and raise awareness on mother and child healthcare. Through the ‘World Breastfeeding Week’ initiative, we aim to continue to reach out to more women in all our project locations.” said Mr Praveer Sinha, CEO & MD, Tata Power.

Additionally, the awareness event also reached out to private medical practitioners, healthcare providers and community men and women to ensure behavioural change.

These efforts of TATA Power was appreciated at International and National forum by World Alliance of Breastfeeding Action ( WABA) and  Breastfeeding Promotion Network of India (BPNI) and awarded TATA Power Community Development Trust for the best celebration of World Breastfeeding Week from Maharashtra Region.
