When You Plant a Tree...

We at TATA Power thus encourage you to become a part of our noble initiative Tree Mittra and plant a tree in your backyard or locality today and share your experience with us!

Our planet has been increasingly becoming a concrete jungle with reducing green cover and destruction of biodiversity. This damage and its effects can be mitigated through a variety of ways and one of them is Afforestation. Afforestation, simply means establishing forest cover by planting trees. Afforestation helps in maintaining or replenishing forest cover in the areas where it has been carried out. Afforestation is beneficial as it results in prevention of soil erosion, stabilizing the climate and improving the quality of air. Moreover, an increase in forest covers retains and maintains the Biodiversity of the region which might have been in danger otherwise due to loss of habitat.

A major issue with Afforestation is that planting of foreign species of trees or plants disrupts the local biodiversity due to the newly introduced species. The introduction of foreign species can be disastrous to the local environment as it disrupts the local biodiversity and are often driving out the local plant flora and the species dependent on it. This has been considered in the conceptualization of Tree Mitra as only plants endemic to a particular area are planted in that area. Thus addressing one of the major issues with Afforestation while ensuring protection of local bio diversity.

Importance of Biodiversity

The various living creatures on earth are scientifically termed as Biodiversity.

It refers not just to species but also to ecosystems and differences in genes within a single species. Every species is dependent on the other, including man, who is a part of this complex networks of interdependent relationships, which is known as the ecosystems.

An ecosystem fulfils our basic needs such as provision of:

  • Water

  • Clean air

  • Food

  • Raw Material

Biodiversity is the key indicator of the health of an ecosystem. A wide variety of species will cope better with threats than a limited number. Even if certain species are affected by pollution, climate change or human activities, the ecosystem as a whole may adapt and survive. However, extinction of a species may have unforeseen impacts, and could even lead to the destruction of the entire ecosystems.

Through Tree Mittra our Afforestation drive, we plan to bring in a balance in our eco system and help in natural existence and survival of the various species on earth.
