Tata Power, through its wholly-owned subsidiary, Coastal Gujarat Power Limited (CGPL), has always been a frontrunner in providing guidance and support to its communities in its operational area. In its endeavor towards building self-reliant communities and raising awareness on animal husbandry, Tata Power’s wholly-owned subsidiary Coastal Gujarat Power Limited (CGPL) and Tata Power Community Development Trust organized the 9th Mega Annual Camel Vaccination Camp under the Kanthi Area Livelihood Program ( KALP) in Bhuj. The camp was organized in collaboration with Animal Husbandry Department-Bhuj and Community.
The 9th Annual Camel Camp brought together the community members in the region dealing in animal husbandry, local opinion leaders, PRI members, community members and CGPL volunteers along their family members. The team from District Animal Husbandry Department comprised of 6 veterinary doctors, 5 Livestock Inspector and 12 helpers, actively supported the camp. After the successful completion of the program the teams of animal husbandry doctors were honored for their continuous cooperation and support. A total 620 camels, 65 camels from the Kharai breed, a variety of camel which is fast becoming extinct, were vaccinated.

Project KALP was launched to augment average income of the communities engaged in livestock business through various interventions. Through this program, CGPL-TPCDT has taken several initiatives to improve the health, yield and feed of these livestock. The collective initiatives have now taken a shape of structured approach towards sustainable development in the catchment area. The camel vaccination camp, being organized since 2007, is aimed at the objective to improve the health condition of the camels in the vicinity by providing necessary vaccinations and raising awareness among villagers and cattle breeders on animal health and care. It is observed that Trypanaosomiasis, skin infections, arthritis, gastro-intestinal problems, miscarriage, and respiratory infections are major issues prevailing in the camels found in the Kutch region.
Further, the mortality rate, among calves, is also high, due to diarrhea, stomach pain, pre mature birth and underweight of calves. Most camel breeders neither provide vaccine nor take prophylactic measures for their camels causing such issues. The camp organized under the Kanthi Area Livelihood Program (KALP) have successfully addressed these issues and has also raised the necessary awareness among the villagers. The initiative will further strengthen the relationship of Tata Power with its communities.
