198 MW group captive wind energy project for Tata Steel

Tata Power Renewables 198 MW project in Karur, Tamil Nadu

Tata Power Renewable Energy Limited (TPREL) has commissioned a 198 MW wind energy project for Tata Steel under the Group Captive model in Karur, Tamil Nadu. One of the largest wind projects of its kind, the project comprises 55 wind turbine generators of 3.6 MW each and strengthens Tata Steel’s access to renewable power.

Designed to generate 31 million units of clean electricity annually, the project is expected to offset around 26,350 tons of CO₂ every year, supporting Tata Steel’s decarbonization and sustainability goals. The project was executed through TPREL’s self-EPC model, with key packages including civil works, Balance of Plant, transmission infrastructure, and 33 kV systems managed through its in-house capabilities.

The project also set new execution benchmarks, with wind turbine foundations completed in 126 days and turbine installation achieved in 167 days. From transporting large turbine components with minimal disruption to managing hard rock excavation and a 516 cubic meter concrete pour within 12 hours, the project demonstrates TPREL’s engineering and project execution capabilities in delivering large-scale renewable energy infrastructure.
