What is green hydrogen?

Green hydrogen is a form of hydrogen gas generated by splitting water molecules into hydrogen and oxygen through electrolysis. Since the process uses electricity from renewable energy sources like solar, wind, or hydro power, it produces no direct carbon emissions, and is therefore called green hydrogen. It is one of the most cleanest form of hydrogen fuel and is helping decarbonize many industries such as transportation, steel production amongst others.

Importance of green hydrogen

Green hydrogen is important because it uses natural resources that are not exhausted. Hence, it has the potential to decarbonize several sectors and industries which are currently reliant on fossil fuels. But that is not enough, here are more reasons: 

  • It is considered highly sustainable as it does not emit polluting gases during combustion or electrolysis when powered by renewable sources
  • Since hydrogen is easy to store, the gas can be compressed in adhoc tanks and subsequently used for other purposes other than after its production. It is versatile enough to be transformed into electricity or synthetic gas and used for commercial, industrial or mobility purposes

Uses of green hydrogen

Green hydrogen has numerous applications such as:

  • It can be used in fuel cells to power vehicles such as trucks, ships, and planes 
  • It can also be used in residential and commercial heating systems 
  • It can aid in the production of chemicals and fertilizers such as ammonia
  • It can also help stabilize the power grid and ensure a consistent energy supply
