National, May 14, 2026: Tata Power Renewable Energy Limited, one of India’s leading renewable energy companies and a subsidiary of The Tata Power Company Limited (‘Tata Power’), has successfully implemented the first commercial rooftop solar project in the Union Territory of Ladakh, a 50 kWp installation at Hotel Barath in Leh, marking a significant milestone in the region’s transition towards clean and sustainable energy.
The project has been executed by Tata Power in collaboration with its channel partner Silk Route Energy and was inaugurated by Shri Rudra Goud P.T., IAS, Administrative Secretary, Power Development Department and New & Renewable Energy, UT Ladakh. The inauguration ceremony was attended by senior officials including Shri Tsewang Paljor, Chief Engineer, LPDD; Tundup Spalzang, Superintending Engineer along with representatives from key trade and business bodies such as the All Ladakh Hotel and Guest House Association (ALHGHA), ALTOA, ALGHA, Merchant Association, and officials from Tata Power Solar, Silk Route Energy, and other stakeholders.
The project is the culmination of sustained efforts over the past five years and stands as a strong model for clean energy adoption in Ladakh. It highlights the growing viability of rooftop solar solutions, supported by accessible financing avenues, including MSME-linked loan facilities, making the transition more practical and scalable for local businesses. TPREL has also collaborated closely with the All Ladakh Hotel and Guest House Association (ALHGHA) to drive awareness and adoption, with several additional rooftop solar installations already in the pipeline.
The tourism sector, a key pillar of Ladakh’s economy, is set to benefit significantly from such initiatives. The integration of solar power into hospitality infrastructure enables hotels to optimise energy use while reducing operational costs and environmental impact, while also strengthening Ladakh’s positioning as a sustainable tourism destination.
This installation marks a significant step towards advancing Ladakh’s vision of becoming a carbon-neutral region, while accelerating the adoption of clean, renewable, and sustainable energy solutions. Rooftop solar systems offer a compelling combination of environmental and economic benefits, enabling consumers to lower long-term electricity costs while contributing meaningfully to the broader transition towards green energy.
With this milestone project, TPREL reinforces its commitment to delivering clean, reliable, and affordable energy solutions, contributing to the Union Territory’s sustainable development goals and supporting India’s broader energy transition.
