Wind energy is power generated from the natural movement of air. As wind flows across the Earth’s surface, it carries energy that can be converted into electricity using wind turbines. Since no fuel is burned in the process, wind energy is a clean, renewable, and sustainable source of energy.
How it works -
1. Wind flows over the blades of a wind turbine, creating lift and causing them to rotate
2. The rotating blades turn a central shaft connected to a rotor
3. The rotor drives a generator housed inside the turbine nacelle
4. The generator converts mechanical energy into electrical energy
5. Electricity is transmitted through cables to substations and then supplied to the power grid
According to the most recent official data, India’s installed wind energy capacity stands at approximately 51.5 gigawatts (GW). This includes utility-scale wind power capacity contributing significantly to the nation’s renewable energy mix. India ranks among the top countries globally in wind power capacity and continues expanding installations to support clean energy goals and low-carbon electricity generation.
Tata Power operates multiple wind energy plants across India with a combined installed capacity of about 1,034 MW. Key wind power projects include Pratapgarh Wind Farm (126 MW) in Rajasthan, Koral Wind Farm (102.6 MW) in Maharashtra, Nimbagallu Wind Farm (100 MW) in Andhra Pradesh, Rojmal Wind Farm (100 MW) in Gujarat, and Poolavadi Wind Farm (99 MW) in Tamil Nadu. These wind energy projects form a core part of the company’s renewable generation portfolio.
Tata Power is seen as a leading wind power company in India because it brings strong, end-to-end capability to its wind energy projects. It starts with expert site assessment to maximize wind energy capture, applies solid engineering and project execution, and follows up with comprehensive operation and maintenance support so turbines stay productive over time. This disciplined approach helps drive reliable wind power generation across multiple states and supports India’s clean energy goals.
Tata Power develops a wind project in India by first carrying out a detailed assessment of potential sites to gauge wind resources and maximize generation potential. Its team then handles the engineering and project design, sizes the capacity, and manages supply chain partnerships with top equipment manufacturers. The company’s execution teams build the wind farm efficiently, and once operational it provides long-term operation and maintenance support, so turbines run reliably for years.
Yes. Businesses and industries in India can set up a wind power plant in India by investing in wind power station projects under policies promoted by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE). The government encourages private sector participation through fiscal and financial incentives, permits 100 % investment under the automatic route, and issues clear guidelines for approval and grid-connected wind power projects. Developers must follow MNRE’s application and regulatory procedures to build and operate a wind power plant project.
