Changing the World one School at a time!

"No one can whistle a symphony. It takes a whole orchestra to play it", especially, when it is a nationwide movement of energy & resource conservation. Tata Power believes that inculcating the value of sustainability and a broad understanding of our dependencies on scarce resources must start early in our children's lives. Spreading this message through the active participation of children  helps in sensitising the larger network of grownups in their families, etc. Tata Power, as an environmentally responsible organisation, has been passionate about building a sustainable future by educating the young minds of tomorrow.

India's energy needs are met by 65% of fossil fuel-based generation. In 2007, Mumbai faced power shortage of 150MW & hence Club Enerji was launched to sensitize people on energy conservation to reduce wastage & stall new capacities based on fossil fuel. With a strategic focus on nation-building, The initiative has grown with the support of students, principals, teachers, parents and partners spread across the country - and this has helped us reach out to more than 533 schools nationwide, sensitize over 23.8 million citizens and save more than 29.8 million units of energy. The Club Enerji network also comprises 3,47,986 Energy Champions and 3,86,633 Energy Ambassadors. This nationwide movement is built with an intent to train and sensitise the future citizens of India. It imparts knowledge and understanding of natural resources and energy conservation to the young minds of the nation.

Club Enerji organizes various activities like nature trails, rallies, skits, annual quiz competition etc for the students, in order to increase awareness on its bio-diversity and conservation programs. Students promote the message of energy conservation via awareness banners and posters that gave tips on saving energy thereby urging the masses to adopt an environment - friendly way of living. Club Enerji students collectively collected 86 tonnes of plastic through beach cleaning drive. The students have sensitised over lakhs of consumers through such spearheading initiatives. The annual quiz competition has become the flagship event to bring some of the brightest young minds from across the country under one roof. The club also conducts plethora of beach cleaning and plastic collection drives that have resulted in significant plastic collection.

In an effort to help conserve energy & curb wastage, Tata Power Club Enerji ran a three month pledge campaign called "Switch off to Switch on".  Started on World Environment

Day (June 5), the campaign had children as ambassadors of energy conservation to raise awareness for creating a sustainable future. The campaign globally garnered 2 million+ impressions on digital platforms organically and 10,000+ pledges on Green Community organically. The Brand AV on ways to curb wastage of electricity was ranked as the 'Top 3 advertisements of the week.' The campaign was trending & reported in the top A&M portals like Brand Equity, Afaqs, Social Samosa & bagged 3 prestigious awards in India. The campaign hosted several Contests, Plastic Cleanliness Drives, Educational AVs & creatives to Switch Off irresponsible consumption & Switch On smart practices leading to savings.

The club has many accolades to its name namely, The Club Enerji movement was showcased at a prestigious, global platform at a TEDx IIM Ahmedabad event on the topic: "Driving Conservation Through Shaping the Future Generation", under 'Renaissance 2.0: Inspiring a better tomorrow', A case study, done by IIM Ahmedabad, on the Club Enerji initiative titled, 'Club Enerji: The Case Study of Tata Power's initiative to promote Energy Conservation among School Children' has been selected for publication at the 'International Conference on the Natural/Applied Sciences, Environmental Engineering and Clean Energy Technologies for Sustainable Development'(SYNERGY-2016). The most recent achievement includes Club Enerji Tata Power being conferred with the coveted Global, "Edison Award" for its "Club Enerji #Switchoff2SwitchOn" campaign under Social innovation category and Social Energy Solutions subcategory. The Edison Awards honour excellence in new product and service development, marketing, human-centred design and innovation. This award is considered akin to winning a Nobel prize for the power industry. Such a scale of success would not have been possible without the whole-hearted support of children, parents and teachers and thousands of our colleagues in Tata Power.  In the coming months and years, we hope to scale this up to make it an even bigger national movement.
