India's first supercritical thermal plant embodies the true spirit of Tata Power
Our energy hub: Mundra
Plant location: Mundra, Gujarat
Plant size: 4,150 MW
About the plant
Tata Power is a leader in green innovation. It built India's first 830 MW supercritical thermal power plant, the 4,150 MW Mundra Thermal Power Station (MTPS). Located near Mundra Port, Gujarat, this powerhouse supplies electricity to five states, namely, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Haryana, and Punjab.
Innovation and solution
Mundra TPS is India's most energy-efficient thermal plant, owing to its supercritical technology. Five 830 MW "once-through" boilers generate more power with less fuel compared to traditional "recirculation" designs
The plant uses imported, low-sulfur coal, meticulously blended to optimize efficiency and minimize emissions. This translates to a significant reduction in greenhouse gases (GHG). MTPS emits as low as 750 grams of CO2 per kWh, compared to the national average of 1,259 grams
Ignite young minds: Supplementing the existing government school curriculum with practical, experimental science education and peer-to-peer learning
Empower educators: Training government school teachers in effective hands-on pedagogy, transforming them into facilitators of a brighter future
Sustainability at Mundra
As an active voice for sustainability, Tata Power has taken immaculate measures to ensure that biodiversity and communities in this region aren’t disrupted
As of 2023, over 3,477 trees like guava, jujube, and coconut have been planted, nurtured with drip irrigation, and protected by fencing. Additionally, wind barriers (9 m high), green belts (100 m wide), hooded conveyor belts, water sprinklers on conveyor belts and coal stockyards, and a dry fog system at the junction tower minimize dust and pollution
As a multi-pronged approach to waste management, fly ash is collected and sold to various industries, while bottom ash is used for road construction
Rainwater harvesting ponds and manmade ponds promote water conservation and serve as eco-zones for birds
A 300 kg/day biogas plant processes solid waste.
Like the whole Tata Power fraternity, MTPS also hosts a spirited celebration for Environment Day. Employees, community members, and students all come together to plant saplings, write slogans, and participate in quizzes. Ambassadors of tomorrow, students of all ages are encouraged to learn about clean energy
A solar water heater has also been set up to provide hot water for the township kitchen utility.
The planting of a staggering 1,076,000 indigenous trees across 430 acres is creating a vital green lung for the region
Environmental compliance
Mundra TPS is going to utilize a seawater-based flue gas desulfurization (FGD) plant. This ingenious system acts like a giant sponge, absorbing sulfur dioxide (SO2) from the smokestack emissions and converting it into harmless sulfate, a natural component of seawater. The treated seawater is then safely returned to the ocean, maintaining the delicate balance of the marine ecosystem.
