Inside Tata Power's community-led green playbook

Community-led clean energy, skill building, and inclusive tech power India’s path to net zero, proving collective progress uplifts people and planet alike

Introduction

Lasting change rarely arrives from the outside. It grows when people guide their own progress. Observing this truth, Tata Power has anchored its CSR and sustainability agenda in a simple conviction: leadership begins with listening. Guided by the Tata ethos of “Leadership with Care,” the company works with communities, identifying local champions, co-designing solutions, and placing people, purpose, and partnership at the center of every step forward.

In doing so, Tata Power has moved far beyond distributing electricity across India; it now powers progress through inclusive infrastructure, future-ready skills, and grassroots innovation, all firmly aligned to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and India’s net-zero aspirations. And through these interlinked chapters, readers will see how community-driven action can power lasting, inclusive change.

Nation first, Community always

India’s pursuit of a green economy transcends mere investment in renewable technologies; it is a strategic effort to fuel economic opportunity and social empowerment across the country. Projections indicate that by 2047, India could host 35 million green jobs, a remarkable leap from the 0.8 million in 2020 and 1 million in 2023. These jobs span solar panel manufacturing and installation, wind turbine maintenance, energy efficiency retrofits, electric vehicle (EV) infrastructure, and more. Such growth underscores the tight interplay between environmental action and human prosperity.

At the core of this interdependence are the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Workforce expansion in clean energy directly advances SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth) by fostering productive employment and entrepreneurship. Simultaneously, scaling renewable capacity addresses SDG 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy), ensuring energy access while reducing carbon intensity. Finally, by nurturing innovation in green infrastructure, be it rooftop solar in dense cities or microgrids in remote villages, India reinforces SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure).

Tata Power’s UNSDG-linked initiatives weave this into a sustainability-driven outcome. From training youth to maintaining solar parks to deploying EV charging stations that lower transportation emissions. Each action is part of a larger narrative: a nation-first vision grounded in community-driven progress. This integrated approach ensures that sustainability initiatives not only cut emissions but also cultivate resilient economies and equitable opportunities.

Smoothly transitioning from national vision to grassroots engagement, Tata Power listens to communities and leads with care.

Listening first, Leading next

Rooted in its Leadership with Care philosophy, Tata Power weaves community insights into every initiative, a vision echoed by the Sustainable Is Attainable (SIA) campaign with News18. Through multiple examples, SIA showcases affordable rooftop solar, EV chargers for homes and MSMEs, and community skill-building, translating this philosophy into nation-first action:

1. Earth Day Shorts like De Power Ko Green Signal connect environmental concepts to everyday life through engaging storytelling.

2. Weekly India Energy Bulletins broadcast on radio and social platforms equip citizens with practical tips such as reducing peak-hour consumption, making energy literacy accessible.

3. SIA Fest Panel Dialogues, aired on national and regional TV, bring thought leaders, policymakers, and local innovators together, fostering cross-pollination of ideas.

4. A dynamic YouTube playlist serves as an on-demand learning hub, reaching village panchayats, Tata Power Skill Development Institute (TPSDI) labs, and Club Enerji classrooms.

By translating conversation into a creative way to tell stories, Tata Power catalyzes meaningful dialogue. Thus, transforming isolated awareness campaigns into community-led dialogues about shared challenges and solutions. Armed with this feedback, Tata Power ensures relevance and impact.

Young Changemakers

Believing that youth hold the spark for sustainable transformation, Tata Power co-established Club Enerji EcoCrew initiative, an environmental education network that has engaged numerous students through hands-on workshops, and creative challenges. The Eco Crew platform mirrors learning: over 5,00,000 students from 1,000+ across Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand learn about sustainable practices and advocate for clean energy adoption, and embark on biodiversity trails, energy-saving missions, and collaborative challenges that instill environmental stewardship and curiosity.

Parallel to this, Adhikaar empowers local champions in the form of 200+ trained Adhikaarpreneurs, and 20+ Ayushman Bharat health camps for staff to bridge gaps in social welfare. By guiding families through government scheme applications and financial literacy programs, these community leaders ensure that infrastructure and services reach the intended beneficiaries, making Tata Power’s impact both deep and sustainable.

Skills for a green economy

A green transition demands a skilled workforce. Roshni addresses this need with practical training in solar panel installation, EV maintenance, LED repair, and entrepreneurship. Operating 56 centers in 15 districts, Roshni has certified 184 youth in solar panel installation & LED repair, equipping them to secure quality jobs or start micro-enterprises. Complementing Roshni, the Tata Power Skill Development Institute (TPSDI) offers sector-specific courses aligned with emerging market trends, spanning renewable energy systems, smart grid technologies, and battery storage management.

Recognizing the importance of inclusive opportunities, Tata Power launched Abha, a women’s employability program present in Delhi, Mumbai, and Odisha. Through Abha, women serve as service ambassadors, managing electricity bill collections, addressing customer queries, and acting as liaisons between Tata Power and households. With flexible work models and training in digital tools, Abha participants gain dignified income streams while ensuring responsive consumer services.

Women-led circular innovation

Circular economies thrive when communities lead them. Through Anokha Dhaaga, Tata Power has enabled 30,000+ women across nine states to revive traditional crafts such as handloom weaving and block printing and adapt them for modern markets. This initiative generated ₹3 crore in revenue this year alone, highlighting the commercial viability of heritage skills.

To close the loop on plastic waste, Tata Power partnered with ReCircle under its Smart Circularity Initiative, repurposing plastic into raw material for upcycled textile products. Women from Anokha Dhaaga now create wearable goods like T-shirts and tote bags for Tata companies, showcasing how waste management, economic empowerment, and innovation can lead to circular economies that are community-led.

Strengthening local systems

Lasting development requires robust local institutions. The Urja initiative enhances rural infrastructure by installing solar-powered clean water systems, establishing health corners in primary health centers, and deploying mobile science labs to remote schools. These interventions tackle sanitation, education, and healthcare challenges, empowering districts to chart their own growth trajectories.

Capturing the spirit of collective service, Arpan mobilizes Tata Power employees into an employee volunteering program. In FY24, 49,420 volunteers logged 268,000 hours across 1,250+ activities, contributing professional skills in digital literacy workshops, environmental campaigns, and content creation for community awareness.

Dating back to 1979, Tree Mittra is a unique flagship volunteering initiative. It is a virtual plantation drive by TATA Power under the Green theme that aims at encouraging employees and their families to adopt a tree, plant it, and nurture its survival. With 4.5 million native trees planted in collaboration with the Maharashtra Forest Department, Tree Mittra restores ecosystems, prevents soil erosion, and bolsters biodiversity.

Bridgital inclusion in action

For over a century, Tata Power has worked towards enabling equitable and sustainable development, shaping initiatives that create lasting social impact. Tata Power, guided by its “Leadership with Care” philosophy, carries this vision forward by fostering inclusive growth through initiatives that empower communities. Pay Autention, India’s first “phygital” autism support network, has reached 18,000+ families across eight states, offering workshops, toolkits, and early intervention guidance. By training Anganwadi workers and grassroots volunteers, Pay Autention bridges the urban-rural divide in neurodiversity care.

Building on this foundation, E-Sanidhya provides a telehealth platform where caregivers and educators can access remote screenings, therapy sessions, and curated learning resources. Within months of launch, E-Sanidhya onboarded 8,000+ users, trained 1,600 professionals, referred 2,700+ children for diagnostic testing, and now serves 9,000+ active users. This inclusive digital framework underpins Tata Power’s vision of empathetic solutions that support neurodiverse individuals and their caretakers.

Measuring what matters

Numbers tell a story, and at Tata Power, the Climate Crew helped turn sustainability goals into real-world triumphs.

Over the past two years, Climate Crew:

 - Cut carbon emissions by nearly 200,000 kg

 - Saved almost 400,000 energy units

 - Prevented 10,000 kg of waste from entering landfills

 - Conserved 1.4 lakh litres of water, the capacity of more than 2 Olympic swimming pools.

Beyond these headline figures, Tata Power’s CSR investment of ₹7,550 crore (FY 2021–25) has touched 47.54 lakh lives. In FY 2024–25 alone, 45.89 lakh people gained access to clean energy education, skill training, and essential services. Among them:

 - 25.43 lakh benefited through flagship programmes like Club Enerji, Roshni, and Pay Autention, sparking community leadership.

 - 20.46 lakh received targeted assistance from disaster relief to health camps

 - 19 lakh individuals under Affirmative Action programmes found support, backed by ₹29.71 crore in funding.

Each metric is more than a statistic; it’s a community story.
