Tata Power Coffee brings clean energy to rooftops in Coorg
Sections
Tata Coffee has built its business around coffee cultivation and processing, with operations located across some of India’s prominent coffee-growing regions. Sustainability and responsible resource use remain important considerations across its operational footprint.
Its facility in Kushalnagara, Coorg, Karnataka, is part of this coffee-processing ecosystem. As the facility meets its daily operational requirements, integrating cleaner electricity sources presents an opportunity to reduce dependence on conventional energy while supporting the company’s broader environmental priorities.
Coffee-processing facilities require a dependable supply of electricity to operate equipment, utilities, and supporting infrastructure. For Tata Coffee, the available rooftop space at Kushalnagara presented an opportunity to generate renewable energy at the point of consumption.
A rooftop solar installation could make productive use of this existing space, support the facility’s daytime energy requirements, and reduce the electricity drawn from conventional sources during solar-generation hours.
Tata Coffee, therefore, partnered with Tata Power Renewables to install a 280 kWp rooftop solar system designed to deliver clean, reliable, and cost-efficient energy across Coorg’s varying seasonal conditions.
Tata Power Coffee brings clean energy to rooftops in Coorg
Installing rooftop solar in Coorg required careful consideration of the region’s climatic conditions. Frequent rainfall, cloud cover, and high humidity meant that the system had to maintain dependable performance across varying weather patterns.
The project needed to address four key requirements -
1. Consistent energy generation
The system had to harness available sunlight efficiently across changing seasons and support the facility’s everyday energy requirements.
2. Weather-responsive engineering
Its design needed to account for rainfall, cloud cover, humidity, and variations in solar availability throughout the year.
3. Long-term durability
The modules, mounting structures, and supporting components had to provide operational stability under regional weather conditions.
4. Uninterrupted operations
Installation and integration had to be managed without affecting the facility’s established processes or productivity.
Rooftop solar offered Tata Coffee a practical way to introduce renewable electricity without requiring additional land or major changes to the facility’s operations.
To translate this opportunity into a dependable energy asset, Tata Coffee partnered with Tata Power Renewables. The project combined Tata Coffee’s sustainability priorities with a solar solution designed around the site’s available rooftop space, climatic conditions, and existing electrical infrastructure.
Tata Power Renewables deployed a 280 kWp rooftop solar system designed to support the Kushalnagara facility’s daily operations.
The solution included -
1. High-performance solar modules
Durable and efficient modules were selected to generate electricity from the sunlight available across different seasons.
2. Climate-responsive system design
The engineering was adapted to Coorg’s rainfall, humidity, and changing weather conditions to support dependable performance.
3. Robust installation standards
The mounting structures and associated components were installed to provide stability and long-term reliability.
4. Efficient rooftop utilization
The system converted existing roof space into a productive clean energy asset without requiring additional land.
5. Electrical integration
The solar installation was configured to work with the facility’s existing power infrastructure and support its operational load during generation hours.
The project was planned around the requirements of an active coffee-processing facility. Installation activities were coordinated to minimize interference with ongoing operations while maintaining appropriate execution and safety standards.
The rooftop layout was developed according to the available space and site conditions. The solar modules, mounting structures, and electrical components were then installed and connected to the facility’s existing infrastructure.
Once integrated, the system began generating renewable electricity for use within the facility whenever sufficient sunlight was available.
The rooftop solar installation is helping Tata Coffee strengthen the environmental performance of its Kushalnagara operations
The Kushalnagara project provides a practical reference for assessing rooftop solar opportunities across other suitable industrial and processing facilities.
Future scalability can be evaluated using factors such as available rooftop space, daytime electricity demand, site conditions, and the performance of existing installations. Regular monitoring and preventive maintenance can also help sustain system output and support long-term asset performance.
Through this partnership, Tata Coffee and Tata Power Renewables have demonstrated how industrial rooftops can support both operational requirements and environmental priorities. The project shows that cleaner energy can become part of everyday business operations without compromising efficiency or continuity.
